Realizing the Vision:
Quantitative Literacy

Welcome to the information and open forum discussion site for the Quantitative Literacy (QL) task force. This site provides one way for the Task Force to:

• Inform the campus community of our discussions
• Obtain feedback through an electronic dialogue and
• Address your questions or concerns.

As we move toward our November deadline for the submission of a final report to the campus community, this site will be an important venue for an ongoing critical analysis of our work.

We encourage you to carefully review the charge to the committee. This will help make clear the material that will be posted over the coming weeks. At this site, you will also find a list of the Task Force members. We encourage you to use these individuals as additional resources for clarifying information and communicating with the Task Force.

To date the Task Force has hosted one open forum, two meetings, and a two-day retreat of the full committee. In addition, we have met with selected campus constituents and gathered evidence that has helped define the various questions that the Task Force needs to address.

The work of the Task Force is based on several fundamental suppositions that, in part, recognize there is a collective, campus-wide, responsibility for ensuring the quantitative skills of MSU graduates. In addition, it is clear that all students must leave MSU with a level of quantitative knowledge and understanding, as well as an ability to apply this knowledge, beyond what they entered with.

Toward this end the Task Force has drafted a set of standards or domains of knowledge that define the various competencies of a quantitatively literate individual. From this, a working definition of QL has been developed. With these as a foundation, the committee is now beginning discussions of curricular model(s), assessment, and the structures and resources necessary to support both the model(s) and their assessment.

In the coming weeks we will be announcing a second open forum for faculty, staff, and students. In addition, we will be presenting at the Student Success conference, meeting with the Council of Deans, and updating the Academic Council. We look forward to your input.

Sincerely,

Doug Estry and Joan Ferrini-Mundy
